  • The American songbook revisited, Pt 2

The companion piece to last year's Shadows in the Night, Fallen Angels is Bob Dylan's second foray into the love songs of Frank Sinatra. Although this collection doesn't have the gravitas which that release blessed us with, Dylan still manages to mine some golden moments from the classic materal here. It is curious that so many longtime fans can't seem to accept this period of Dylan's musical journey, especially since they were undoubtably aware of what they were buying. Clearly Bob Dylan knows where he wants to take his audience, but it appears a lot of his longtime fans cannot accept that the times, they are a'channging.

I can't believe he actually brought out a second album of these songs. They are falling-on-the-floor-laughing awful.

...is what the cover is saying. I don’t buy the premise for one thing. Dylan’s whole career is basically ‘It’s not fair and I’m bitter!’ Unless someone at Columbia is horny to make a deal with the Sinatra estate, I don’t understand the point. Hey, how about you cover a bunch of songs by the people you came up with who DIDN’T get to be Bob Dylan…like the Phil Ochs, the Eric Andersons, the Richard and Mimi Farina’s, or the JOAN BAEZ”S. Or anyone you care to mention. Tracy Chapman! . Here is 5 cents worth of advice, Bob. Nobody who would buy a Dylan album would buy a Sinatra album. This is harsh but it is coming from a place of love. You are part of American civilization dude. So was Frank... and then you came along. Seriously, withdraw and delete.

Save your cash / Dylan is running out of material but perhaps loves your money! This album is just plain dung! Trust me he is once again just going on his name! Lazy boy Dylan should be ashamed.
  • Bob Dylan goes Leon Redbone!!!

This album and the last album are great!!! To me it is a nod to Leon Redbone!!! Ironically, it was Bob Dylan who founded Leon Redbone!! Dylan has done it all, so why not do these types of albums!! I would like to see him do Bluegrass next!!! He just keeps everyone on their toes!!!!

So this is what the disciple of Woody Guthrie has become in his old age — totally irrelevant, and, need I say, boring. If this all that is left in the tank Bob, close down the Never Ending Tour, put the guitar out to pasture, and spend what is left of your twilight years at home playing with the grandkids.
  • No Chops

Bob Dylan has no sense of rhythm or timing to do this type of music. He swings and grooves like a Lutheran Choir. So strange?? I can’t imagine anyone digging these interpretations of the classic standards. All musicians, regardless of their talent and legendary status, have to practice, woodshed and hone their craft. You can certainly tell the ones that don’t put in the time.

...that every bad review of this album also contains extremely poor grammar and spelling? Must be a correlation between that deficiency and the faculty for appreciating this lovely album- a beautiful valentine of gorgeous standards covered by a master of the craft AND his incredible band.
