It’s not White Pony or the S/T, but good lord. I saw them on WARP tour with Rocket From The Crypt, and it was the tour for this album. It was beyond impressive. When they started I had been waiting in line for water for half an hour, but they were better than water. This album ROCKS. If you like TOOL think of it as their Undertow.

Far and away their best album. Raw and aggressive tracks. Minus Blindfold, Bored and 7 are amazing.

Deftones at their most raw and aggressive and, in my opinion, their best. This is an album that laid the ground for the nu-metal wave, but that still holds up today as an amazing metal album. You get melody and riffs. You get angst, anger, and introspection. You also get the full range of Chino Moreno’s vocal ability from crooning to rapping to screaming to squealing. I didn’t fall in love with the Deftones the first time I heard them, but now this album is one of my favorites.

One of my all time favorite albums from beginning to end. Wish Deftones stayed true to their original sound and could still produce albums as good as their first!

Well, it looks like iTunes finally realized all the explicit lyrics they overlooked for God knows how many years. This was the first album by the Deftones. This was their most raw sound and certainly their most aggressive album. They don't really go back to this style later in their discography, which may have turned off the earliest Deftones fans. But I really appreciate all the different directions they've explored, and it's always important to recall where they started from. Bored - 9/10 Super catchy. Very simple, but because it's simple, I think it gets across very well as the embodiment of boredom that is actually fun to listen to. Chino just belts it out at the final chorus, and that's my favorite part. This was also the first Deftones song I ever heard, and it will always be special to me. Minus Blindfold - 8/10 This song is a lot more technical than the last. The harmonics that Stef Carpenter hits in riffing is what really makes this track happen. One Weak - 6/10 This song's melody is a little bit reminescient of Bored, but it's still a good track. Nosebleed - 7/10 Fast, aggressive. Good track. Lifter - 7/10 I like the chord progression quite a lot with the major chord ascending a half step. It's kinda different. Root - 9/10 Really solid track! I love the guitar part the most. Way to kill it, Stef! 7 Words - 10/10 This will forever be my favorite Deftones track. Chino just expels every negative emotion in one, brutal track. The guitar riffs in the chorus really boost up the raw anger of this track. Birthmark - 8/10 I like this one a lot. The guitar is the most appealing part to me. I will also mention that the melody in the verse is really great. Engine No. 9 - 9/10 This is their claim to fame in the world of nu-metal. It's a great fusion of rap and metal. And they didn't even need a rapper to feature on it! Chino just nails it. Fireal - 6/10 This song is significantly slower than the rest. It's very technical at the beginning, but the best part is the chord progression in the last half. Fist - 2/10 I don't care for this track. It's intrumental, aside from Chino vocalizing in the background. This was all that Ross Robinson (producer for Korn's and Slipknot's debuts) constributed to the Deftones, which honestly isn't much.
