I figured the Deftones would never be what they were without Chi. Truth is they won’t. However, this album showed that they could continue on and still make impressive music that still represents their roots. Gore. A terribly boring album, shows that maybe the further they go on without Chi will only showcase how much they actually needed him. I believe this album was truly the last true Deftones album with Chi still strongly held close to them creatively.

Sad state of affairs that a classic like this has under 20 reviews on iTunes but talentless rappers get five-star reviews totaling in the tens of thousands for peddling BS.

Guess what? This band has changed or "evolved" over the years, yet still sound like DEFTONES. This makes them true geniuses and truly amazing artists. Like all their albums, DE is simply amazing. This band is very sincere in everything they put out and they keep the ball rolling with some great material! DEFTONES stole my heart once again. Love you guys!

This is the first album to feature bassist Sergio Vega in place of Chi Cheng, who was injured into a state of comatose by a car accident. The incident interrupted their progress on another record, Eros, which has since been shelved. Also, Stef Carpenter officially upgrades to the 8 string guitar, delivering a new layer of Deftones' heavier sound we haven't heard before. In general, this album is more optimistic than the last few that seem to show the band feeling like the were slowly moving downhill. If I'm going to be honest, I think this is my least favorite Deftones album, but some of my favorite Deftones tracks came out of it. Diamond Eyes - 10/10 Amazing melody. Amazing guitar riff (8 string power, right there)! The chorus features some 6/4 and 5/4 alternation. It's compositionally solid. I just wish it was a longer song because it is the best from the album. It also disappoints to start with the best track, but oh well. Royal - 9/10 Brutal riff at the start matched by screaming vocals. Best part is the outro, hands down. Cmnd/Ctrl - 8/10 I personally see this track as a throwback to nu-metal, just more advanced. The 8 string guitar lines throw down a heavy sound like Deftones never made before mixed with some 3/4 and 4/4 alternation during the verses, giving those lines a feeling of 7/4. Chino kinda "raps" through these sections, and it's really unique considering they haven't done anything like that in ten years. Has nu-metal been technical before? Besides Mudvayne, I would say no. This track is very different for that reason. You've Seen The Butcher - 4/10 This was a single before the album's release. People love this track, but it's just not my cup of tea. Beauty School - 7/10 Very solid song. It just feels... uplifting, I guess. Love the melody the most. Prince - 7/10 This song is heavier... It reminds me of RX Queen from White Pony a little bit. Rocket Skates - 9/10 AMAZING guitar riffs from Stef on this one! Sextape - 4/10 Everything tones back for this song. It feels like an optimistic track (the lyrics too), but the title doesn't do it for me. Risk - 7/10 Emotional song about Chi Cheng. Great riffs from Stef showcasing the 8 string. 976 - Evil - 1/10 Honestly, I think this is the most bland song Deftones has ever produced. I can't do this one. This Place Is Death - 2/10 Not much better than the last track. Do You Believe - 7/10 Pretty good bonus track. The only do the chorus twice and end with fade-out. It's kinda disappointing. Ghosts - 5/10 This song is alright. Kinda ambient. Caress - 6/10 This track almost sounds punky to me. It's odd to me for Deftones, but it's decent.

I can't explain them to you if you're not already a diehard fan. Just listen to the album and find out.
