I think this album is flawless. Probably the only”metal” album I listen to from beginning to end and never skip a song . The recording is raw but still thumps your chest, great mix . Darkthrone’s musicianship is incredible here. The topography of the music is impressive. You hear influences from Celtic Frost to Slayer to NY hardcore , but kicks all of it in the face . You can call it black metal or death metal . I call it one the greatest albums ever made. Time has only made it better.
  • important release but there is much better

I know i'm painting a target on myself for the black metal eliteists when i say this, but this album is not that great. I get the signifiance of the record but it really doesn't have anything memorable about it. I like cool, dissanat riffs in my black metal and this record doesn't really have that. It probably didn't help that i kind of went in a strange direction with Darkthrone, but i think if you have "Under a Funeral Moon" and "Transilvanian Hunger" you really don't need this one besides to value of having it.

great album! if you're a black metal fan get transilvanian hunger, under a funeral moon, and a blaze in the northern sky and you'll be set.

Though Mayhem were the ones who officially started Norwegian Black Metal, Darkthrone had the first reaease. Though in 1987 Mayhem's Deathcrush had the sound of Black Metal, it was TECHNICALLY Death Metal. This was technically the FIRST True Black Metal release. Easily one of Darkthrone's BEST albums EVER. I STRONGLY recommend 'In The Shadow Of The Horns'!!!
  • no black metal fan should be without it

To the person who presented the album info for iTunes: I think that before someone goes and posts inaccurate information of a band they obviously know nothing about, they should do a few minutes worth of research on the band so they do not sound like an old ninny. Thanks...

Darkthrone's first attempt at a black metal album was certainly their best. Please don't waste your time with any of Darkthrone's albums after Panzerfaust.
