Reviews

  • Four Stars for Sweeney Todd 2005 Revival

A good recording overall, great to listen to and has the best quality out of all the recordings of Sweeney Todd. However, the album is incredibly incomplete and by that I mean there are so many songs from the show that are missing such as 'Parlor Songs','Wigmaker's Sequence' and 'City on Fire'. There is a whole page of dialogue missing during Anthony's Johanna between Anthony, Turpin and the Beadle that is missing. These missing parts of the show are essential to telling the story of Sweeney Todd. On a more positive note Michael Cerveris's interpretation of the role of Sweeney Todd definitely rivals with that of George Hearn and Len Cariou in both singing and acting and Patti LuPone brings forth a phenomenal Mrs. Lovett and truly lives up to her great reputation in this cast recording. It was really hard for me to give this album four stars because it's a version that I myself cannot stop listening to and the quality of the singing is just so good, but what kills me is that it is so incomplete.

I saw this production and was so flabbergasted at how amazing it was ... The simplicity of the instrumentation brought the lyrics even more forward ... I know people have an attachment to the 1984 production ... But even Sondheim said that this was how he saw it in his head ... Awesome cast recording!!!

I don't mean to be pessemistic. I LOVE Sondheim, however, who would agree with me when I say that Tim Burton's movie was pretty sweet. I know it probably didn't have as much as this play does, but at least Sondheim did the music for it rather than that horrible Danny Elfman.
  • ok, but missing something not sure what-PLEASE READ-comment back

Benjamin, Johnny, and Len have 3 totally different vioces, but the scary-emotional way about them has the same pull on me... i get the same feelings-- like omg he so scary-emotional, "i feel so bad for this guy, but he lost some his marbles", all 3 men have the power to control my emotions around this sad story, and they are all excellent actors. Reviewers may hate me for this, but i did not like Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. Angela has an wonderful vioce--that i love btw (amazingly wide range) but I think that she played her character a bit obnoxiously, and her accents great but it feels sometimes like shes trying to make fun of it..like shes not taking it seriously..sorry my opinion. Patti Lupone is a great singer, but i wish she would've thickened her accent...in my opinion i think mrs lovetts cockney accent should be alot like Eliza's in My Fair Lady..thick but not too thick. Helena's approach to her character seemed to fit right to me-with the setting and the time period, women were usually quiet and content. Johnnys visage and feel playing sweeney feel right to me too..the slitted eyes..and the--how should i say--quietness and the eyes with revenge all showed his anger in a non-explosive way, you can still recognize the emotions he's feeling and they hit you. Len is a marvelous actor and singer but i believe that he was overdramatic and should have dummed it down just a little bit. In the movie. I was disppointed that some songs were cut out of the film..like the duet with Anthony and Johanna...but then when i watched the movie and imagined them singing it--the songs that were cut didnt seem like they wouldve fit right. I'm really sorry if this offends anyone and please i really dont want to start arguments, this is just my opinion--i DO like the original and the revival cast...but i truely think that the movie cast potrayed the characters better and I like it the best.

Patti Lu Pone does not have the right voice, ether play it as miss Angela Lansbary(the best) or as the decrepit skeleton that is Helana Carter, this just doesn't sound right Also, she can't do a British acsent very well (and yes I'm a horrible speller)
  • Just okay...

To me this feels like a watered down version of Sweeney. where's the explosion of the orchestra after he yells "at last my arm is complete again!" Also, I love Patti, but she does NOT make a good Mrs. Lovett. As far as i'm concerned, Angela Lansbury is the only Mrs. Lovett there has ever been. She created that role, and she has performed it the best. No other actress who has ever played Mrs. Lovett has even come close to Angelas. She brought life and humor to the play. The first time I heard "A little Priest" by Angela and Len I nearly died of laughter; It's a sweet little old lady singing about killing people and turning them into pies, it's genius satire. But no one plays Mrs. Lovett has the sweet little old lady anymore. They play her has this creepy, dreary, depressing woman which makes for a very BORING story (I'm lookin at you too Helena). Overall it's still an alright recording but I would recommend the original any day.
