To say I’m a DCD fan would be a gross mischaracterization. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerard are from another time and place. A distant galaxy of consciousness. They transcend being human. This album hurls the listener into that realm. I sum it up with two words: intense and powerful. The first songs per act blew me out of the water. I found myself viscerally moved by Sea Borne. The Mountain jarred my teeth loose. I felt that drone in the deepest recesses of my mind. A warm, icy finger probing my soul. DCD has no equal on this planet.

When first hearing of their return to the studios some months ago to record their first album in six years, I was completely excited to hear what new music landscapes awaited... Now that the their release is has arrived, I hold mixed a response to the this album on the whole. Love the idea of the concept, but sonically, it’s reach is more inline with a personal odyssey rich in exotic instrumentation, scope, and phrasing than that of the god most associated with viticulture, ecstasy, and theatre. Listed as a two act LP vs. a title set of individual tracks that one could regularly select and listen, the entire album plays as a continuous piece interspersed with soundscapes between each song and comes up shy 3-4 soul satisfying tunes to an overall listening experience. P.S. I’m certain they’ll do a No-Am tour in the toward the end of the following year.

This just made me smile as it ended. Such a beautiful vocal duo on the last part of the 2nd track! I think this is Dead can Dance doing what they do best. The album has a very even keeled feeling. It sounds like it's DCD stripped down to the essentials, there is a sense of restraint and calmness. But it also sounds current to me, with a modern sleekness perhaps. To those who say there is not enough of this or that, I say don't be greedy. It sounds to me like mature artists doing what they love, and I find it quite satisfying!

My fave record from them since, I don't know, Aion I guess. The rhythmic workouts are pretty great.

Ethereal and groovy, a bit atypical for the duo but sadly limited to two tracks; less than 30 minutes of music for $10.99. Oh well, at least they will tour America ... right???

DIONYSUS necromantically revives that hoary idea, the 70s prog rock concept album, and modernizes it. You won't find lyrics dedicated to the God of the Wine. Rather, you'll find two wordless suite-like pieces that serve as a soundtrack to an imaginary documentary. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's voices aren't the focus here; the vocals are blended together, and, on occasion, digitally altered. The point of the album is atmosphere and the flow of the music. DIONYSUS is DCD at their most ritualistic. The mix of folk and electronic rock makes it sound like a more sophisticated form of trance music.

I’ve been a dedicated fan since their first album. It’s actually hard to write this as I have never been disappointed in anything they have created. This seems to be a Brendon Perry production of his percussion and instrumental improvisation. It has no feel or sense of Dead Can Dance and you can hardly notice Lisa Gerrard at all. I must say that I am completely disappointed. It’s one long improvisational sound piece. Brendon can’t pull off the non lyrical singing which really made this album feel that real creative effort was not put forth to produce this.

It warms my heart to hear this new release, I've been waiting for a few years. DCD are the masters at this genre and have truly mastered it. I'm sore that there hasn't been a US leg of the tour announced yet. They're amazing live!! Love both tracks of this new album!
  • Another amazing album

I am a huge DCD fan and have all the albums they put out as well as their live concert dvd and all of them have been incredible.this one is no exception...the only thing I could say I might be disappointed in is the album ended fast and I wish it was longer .As you know...once you get caught up in the “dead can dance trance “ you wish it would never end .Cant wait for the next one 👍👍👍👍👍

The album’s story may be prominently inspired by that of Dionysus, but its cover detail comes from a mask made by the Huichol of the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico - famous for their yarn paintings and objects meticulously decorated with beadwork - who use peyote as a sacred rite and ritual for the purposes of healing and mind expansion. At its core, it’s this which is key to understanding the sentiment of Dead Can Dance’s latest opus - a celebration not just of humanity but of humanity’s working alongside nature with respect and appreciation.
