Emotional Rescue

After having finally stepped out of the shadow of The Beatles with "Beggars Banquet," and after finally finding their own platinum stamp with the brilliant Mick Taylor and the three must-have classic albums that followed, the slow descent into confusion that started with the misfired "Goat's Head Soup" and under appreciated (but not at all risky) "It's Only Rock n Roll" and got a momentary reprieve with the novelty of "Some Girls," "Emotional Rescue" is the start down the slippery slope of irrelevancy and muddle that has marked every Stones album since 1980. Yes, it has some good grooves and yes, you can dance to it ... but the Stones were no longer leading, they were following. In fact, they were running to catch up. No longer did they have a cursed genius like Brian Jones to pull the music in unexpected directions, or a superlative technician like Mick Taylor to bring even mundane material some flickering moments of technical mastery. No, they had Ron Wood, who is a fine player on his own and a fun jammer with Keith, but in the world's greatest rock 'n roll band, who needs a second Keith? Keith always played best when he was challenged with a foil, not when he had a little brother. And so what the Stones claimed was an asset was really just a contributor to the murk. Love this album if you will, but don't even try to hold it up to any of the Jimmy Miller-produced albums. There's nothing at risk here. They're not playing like their lives depend on it. It's OK music. You know, like Foghat.

Just got on vinyl, great rockers (Summer Romance, Let Me Go, She’s So Cold, Where The Boys Go) and disco (Dance, Emotional Rescue, Send It To Me). Highly recommended!

This is one of my personal favorite The Rolling Stones albums. This album has a great flow, track after track. Also, this album has great vocals, great drum solos, and great guitar solos as well. Finally, the instruments wrap around the vocals like no other, and intertwine perfectly. Definitely looking forward to the next limited play album, and extended play album from The Rolling Stones.
