KISS, in 1979, was teetering on the end of oblivion. Disco had come, and with it, changing musical tastes. So the inevitable question, change with the times, or keep plowing ahead in the same vein? To their credit, KISS did branch out. A bit. The first single released “I was made for loving you” was a radical departure. Many fans hated it, but the single was a huge hit. Go figure.
The album as a whole, I think gets pigeonholed as a disco record, when it’s really not. There’s some really well written songs here. Are they going to be compared to the stuff that came earlier? No. But that’s the point. Give “X Ray Eyes” a listen. The absolutely fantastic “Sure Know Something” is another reason why Paul Stanley is an underrated songwriter.
But it’s Ace Frehley who comes out ahead. Three songs here, “2000 Man” “Hard Times” and the finale “Save your love” rock. Peter Criss’ lone effort is a good one too in “Dirty Livin’” all but out of the band, he at least got one last song to sing.
All in all, a solid record. Give it a try.
