(— I am hereby revising my original review written below because I lacked enough exposure to it to make a sufficient judgement on the album. As I have continued listening to this album non stop for several days I find myself falling more and more deeply in love with this music lingering on every drop of sound. I was foolish to write what I wrote about williams’ music not measuring up to Mutter’s playing. (I was just disappointed it didn’t include a piece I was hoping for and it wasn’t in concerto form.) I have fallen in love with every track; I can’t stop listening, I’m understanding the pieces more and more and hearing something new in each listen. I’m so thankful I have this album to enjoy, I’m not kidding it has influenced my outlook on everyday life. It has changed my life forever. It’s true, it has) —- my original review: Wow! I had high hopes for this album because I’m ASM’s #1 fan, and I am also a fan of Williams. I thought I knew what approximate sound I was going to hear and was eagerly curious to see it enlightened by custom music from Williams. Mutter’s sound was even more unexpectedly magnificent. (And this is coming from her #1 fan!). I am beside myself; the way she breathes life and musicianship into this music, it’s like she packs the complexity of a galaxy of sound in every eighth note. She continues to evolve her artistry even given the medium of what is now works written just for her. To this end, I have not been disappointed. My heart has been unexpectedly deeply and intimately touched again and I am reminded of who I am when I listen to ASM perform these works. This brings me to detail #2. Perhaps it is because her sound, in my opinion, severely “outplays” the music, but I found myself, despite these pieces being very beautifully crafted, underwhelmed by the compositions themselves. They are still absolutely wonderful pieces, but despite being unable to do better myself, I expected more from Williams. These pieces would fit nicely in the ears of slightly less capable and uniquely proficient artists, and in anyone else’s hands they will never be played as well again as they have been in this album. But they are hers, and she plays the heck out of them every nanosecond. You may disagree and find the writing superior, but you just can’t disagree with the transformative powers her musicianship and artistry brings in listening to it.
