This is another excellent tribute to the great John Prine. Another reviewer commented that Valerie June’s cover of “Summer’s End” is bad, but that’s a lazy take. Valerie was the opener for two of John’s recent tours and dueted with him on those tours. You can hear the respect and love for that man in her cover. That rings through for all of these artists; even if their voice or style isn’t your thing, you can tell they are doing their best to honor a legend. That’s worth a listen.

…except for the version of “Summer’s End”. Absolutely horrible…sounds like a wounded cat screeching in pain!! They should have used Nathaniel Rateliff’s brilliant version instead!!

Brandi’s ability to sing her good friend John’s song posthumously..is quite beautiful. I remember seeing them a few times on Cayamo..and it was so evident.. the afffection she had for him, and the way she made his eyes twinkle. Do yourself a favor and watch a few of their duets on YouTube …and also look at her tribute to him singing his song Summer’s End. It was right when he was passing, or had passed, and she was singing to him outside..on her deck. It was like a form of prayer, or at least that was my interpretation. Really heartfelt, this one. She does him proud.
