  • Ever Evolving Type Band...

... And I appreciate it more with each listening. I reviewed "Headstand:" and "Submarines" early upon release, and then reviewed the album as a whole once it was released and i listened to it thoroughly (or so I thought). After a few more listens with the headphones on and away from distraction, I've come to appreciate this album a lot more. It's not the bombast and complexity of "Fantastic Planet", or even the varied sounds and tones of "In the Future Your...", but it is an ever evolving sound of Failure in. bizarre times. A great album to fully enjoy, thank you Failure

I’ve been eagerly anticipating a first listen of this material since the 3rd Gear Scratch podcast with Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times). 50 hrs of jams boiled down to 2 hours of highlights, selections from that shaped into these ten songs. ‘Headstand’ reminds me of the more ‘jam-y’ selections from Fantastic Planet, but with a new synth atmosphere that is its own. Don’t worry, Ken’s signature bass still rumbles, the interplay of Greg’s dissonant then melodic guitar, and Kellii’s bombastic caveman drumming — all are still present, just with a new garnish, a new cherry on top. It’s sound is immense, like it was recorded in an ice cave on a moon of Jupiter (if there was air). So excited to hear the rest. Update: So this is after listening to the rest. This album represents the biggest shift in their sound since their return in 2014. This is due to 3 factors: 1. Use of the Fender Bass 6 (look it up). 2. More synths than ever before. 3. More slick production (not that it wasn’t before). The lows are lower, the rumbles rumblier, the vocals are very smooth. There is still plenty of dissonance, still nice vocal harmonies. Spacey poetic imagery is mostly gone, replaced (as Greg suggested in an interview) with things more earthly and immediate. This will forever be remembered as their pandemic album. It’s really good and I like it. Like all their albums it took several listens and time to marinate before I “got it”. Any longtime fan will probably like it, just be ready to stretch your ears.

Not since fantastic planet have I been so into an album. Every song is a good song. No fillers, just solid music.

Your favorite band’s favorite band is back and sounding perfect as always! Based on the lead single this album sounds like it’s going to sound extra dark and sinister, which I’m very excited for! Christmas is coming early this year! I’m so incredibly ready! *Full Review* I always find it incredible how this band manages to enter new creative territory while still maintaining that classic Failure sound. Nothing ever feels rehashed, but also doesn’t stray far away from what makes them who they are. This is a lovely batch of songs that fit beautifully in with the rest of their catalog, and I will be playing many of these tracks for years to come! I do think this album falls a little short from their previous juggernaut of a release, but I wasn’t anticipating for them to top that album. ITFYBWBTFTFYM is basically Fantastic Planet 2 in my opinion with the way it flows and the quality of the music. Wild Type Droid is more of a fast burner and can be more compared to Magnified. As someone who generally prefers longer albums it is a little underwhelming to only get 10 songs, but quality over quantity right? And there is no shortage of quality here! Highlight tracks for me are definitely: Long Division, Headstand, Submarines and Undecided. Water with Hands is also worth mentioning for how different of a vibe it is for Failure, but how effective it is as an opener. Also Half Moon is excellent. I love the trend of Greg Edwards being on vocals for the closing tracks on their recent releases. Greg has a wonderful and unique voice and adds lovely harmonies to Ken throughout. I definitely wouldn’t mind him taking lead vocals more often! Overall I give this record a strong 9/10! Very enjoyable, and I can’t wait to hear what the band continues to do from this point! Hopefully they can tour this album because I’d love to go see them live again!
