Philadelphia Mississippi Pilgramage Welcome to Philadelphia Mississippi and the story of the HipHop Blues Chuck Treece and I began working together in 1993 on some of the first Special Sauce Demos out of Philly’s legendary Studio Four. We reconnected during the Pandemic and continued our works as the G.Love/Chuck Treece Duo. We played backyard SoulBQues all up and down the east and West Coasts , desperation gigs to keep the music alive and the money coming in to feed our families. Chuck traveling with his son Kieran Treece and me traveling with my pregnant wife and our two small boys. We got a gig playing in Mississippi so I reached out to my old friend Luther Dickinson about a project I’ve had in mind, Philadelphia Mississippi. Luther and I have known each other since 1995 when his father, Jim Dickinson produced my second G. Love and Special Sauce album, Coast to Coast Motel. I hit up North Mississippi Allstar Luther Dickinson and asked him to produce Philadelphia Mississippi the pilgrimage of the HipHop Blues pioneers G.Love and Chuck Treece to the heart of the Hill Country Blues. We had a 5 day cutting session and due to the pandemic and everybody being off the road we were able to put together an outstanding cast of characters to join us in the studio. Christone Kingfish Ingram, Alvin YoungBlood Hart, Jontavious Willis, RL Boyce, Cam Kimbrough grandson of Junior Kimbrough, Trenton Ayers, Tikyra Jackson of Southern Avenue Sharde Thomas granddaughter of legendary Blues Fife player Othar Turner. The recordings were immediate, oozing with the vibes of Zebra Ranch Studio and the rich culture we had thrown ourselves into. Chuck and I wrote a handful of tunes in Tennessee on a stop off on the way to the studio, augmented with my own writing over the last couple years, as well as on the spot studio writing with our collaborators lead us into some wonderful creative space capturing the essence, energy and inspiration of freshly created compositions. During our post production we brought our HipHop Blues tracks up north to record legendary rappers Schoolly D, Speech of Arrested Development and New York’s very own Freddie Foxxx to capture some of my major HipHop influences. These legends did not disappoint and took our Mississippi Blues straight back to the streets of Philly. Philadelphia Mississippi is truly a pilgrimage to the heart of the blues paying homage to the great tradition of the Hill Country and Delta blues while at the same time pushing forward into the direction of the hip-hop blues which we have created in 1993
