Just amazing. Hoping I will one day get a chance to see this on Broadway. It will probably not be the same without the amazing Ethel Merman.....

I have always wanted to hear what Gypsy was all about and so last night I bought the album here on iTunes. Wow. What had I been missing out on all these years! Ethel Merman and the rest of the cast shine here. Their voices are amazing. I didn't think it would be something for me, but I listened to the whole album and fell in love with it. It's a new favorite of mine.

What is about Gypsy? From the stand out overture to the finale of a mother and daughter finally coming to terms with themselves, this show is in a class by itself. The part was written specifically for Ethel Merman, so while other editions have great merit, it all began with a team writing specific songs for a particular voice. The blend of story, songs, and showmanship succeed in a unifying whole that few musicals achieve. The part of Momma Rose also allowed Ethel Merman to demonstrate the depths of her acting ability. Her version of Everything's Coming Up Roses stands alone as a paean of sunny optimism when everything is falling apart. Other actresses have tried giving it a disturbing psychological edge, but "sung as written" makes a lot more sense here.Other verisons deserve a listen, but here is the ultimate triumph.
  • Prefer Bette Midler

The first time I saw Gypsy, it was the film version starring Rosalind Russell in the role of "Mamma". The second time, Bette Midler. I think I prefer the movie and soundtrack starring Bette Midler. While I don't think Ethel is necessarily shouting at the audience, like another reviewer said; I don't feel any sympathy for her version. Yes, I know, she originated the role, but I guess it's what you're used to.

I love the play, but the music of this show doesn't really appeal to me at all. It doesn't sound unique or anything. And as for Ethel Merman, in every song it sounds like she's shouting at the audience.

I LOVE this! Gypsy is probably one of the best musicals of all time. It's funny, yet touching. And who doesn't love Ethel Merman, the big lady with the big voice. The musical is based on the life of Gypsy Rose, a really good stripper. I just love the musical, and so I love the soundtrack. My favorite songs are You Gotta Have a Gimmick, Some People, and Everything's Coming Up Roses. If you like this, you have great taste!!!!! Go Ethel Merman!!!!! -S
