Reviews

  • Classic Natalie, but also quite elecletic

Natalie’s voice is in top form here. The songs are instantly catchy. Shades of ‘Our Time In Eden’ with the use of horns on several tracks. Lots of string arrangements and piano. Folk, R&B, pop, even some Celtic influences. This may be my favorite album of hers since Ophelia.

I love this woman. So real and so candid and not afraid to be vunrable .This is a great album. Her voice is as vibrant as ever .The timeless appeal of Carnival is echoed in Keep Your Courage, which speaks volumes for the cohesive, eternal quality of Merchant's ability to weave romantic, folk-rock ballads rich with organ, brass, and tidal waves of strings all anchored to simple piano melodies.

This so far the best album of 2023. Everything from the music and the incredible lyrics. It’s been too long but it is worth the wait. Download or buy a physical copy. You won’t be disappointed

Natalie Merchant’s voice gave me an outlet in my youth - boy I used to belt out the songs on In My Tribe and Our Time in Eden! - and now I’m nearly 50 getting such genuine pleasure from the rich, soothing sounds of her voice. This album is just delightful.

I’ve been a fan of Natalie for a couple decades. Even more as I’ve grown older. The songs all have a classic Natalie feel but there’s enough diversity in this release that it justifies purchase.

Normally I would "review" an album based on one track but with Natalie Merchant you know the quality goes in before the name goes on any project she tackles. It's been a long wait but it's truly worth it. Her voice is as clear and strong and ever and "Come On Aphrodite", for me, had a hints of the world famous Memphis' High Rhythm Section that made Al Green's career soar. Can't wait to get this album into rotation for my radio station. Gonna be a long two months! 2/15/23

The wait is usually years between her releases but always well, well worth the wait. Her songwriting is always on point and amazing. She wrote that these songs were written during the pandemic and are about the human heart, that this is a song cycle that maps the journey of a courageous heart.
