Bark at the Moon (Bonus Track Version)

As much as I love Randy’s playing on the first two albums, Jake E. Lee took Ozzy to a whole new level!! Centre Of Eternity is the crown jewel of this album!

I love the first three Ozzy studio albums. I have always loved this album. Ozzy really sings his heart out and the tunes are great. My personal favorite song is ‘You’re No Different’. My least favorite tune here is the ballad ‘So Tired’, which stops me from giving it five stars. Ozzy has always sounded terrific singing ballads...his heart on his sleeve vocal style is just perfect for ballads. I consider ‘So Tired’ his weakest ballad, right next to the Black Sabbath song ‘She’s Gone’. However, I love the rest of this album. I used to play ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Rebel’ on my radio shows. What a great song. Just don’t believe the songwriting credits. Ozzy did not write the songs by himself. Bob Daisley and Jake E Lee helped write all of the songs. Just wish they would have been credited. Anyway, this is a great album.

All of Jake’s guitar fills are in this version right now. Definitive way to listen to this album now. Not like the remastered and / or remixed version that came out in 2002 or 2003. This is my personal favorite Ozzy album of all time.

Most people review this album with the approach of “it’s not that bad, considering Randy had died.” I love Randy as much as anyone, but this album is fantastic. The songwriting is great. The arrangements are great. And yes, the guitar playing is as good as anything you’d expect on any Ozzy album, regardless of who the guitarist is. People forget that Bob Daisley wrote a lot of the material for this album (just as he did for Blizzard and Madman) and he and Jake E. Lee obviously worked well together. There are really unique and special songwriting and arrangement moments throughout. Things I still haven’t heard other people do in a hard rock or metal context. And the bass lines are incredible. I’ve listened to this album probably a 1,000 times since it was released and I still love to listen to each song every time I hear it. I can’t imagine anything better I could say about an album than that! Do yourself a favor and listen to this one on its own merits and leave what came before and after behind. You might find yourself feeling the same way as me.

I've been reading about this awful remix but this album sounds great. While it's of course it's not on par with the Randy Rhodes albums, nothing is so, why grade on an unfair curve? BARK AT THE MOON sounds far better than any album Zack Wylde played on, and in my opinion, Jake E. Lee's style fits Ozzy's music with perfection. Also, a good thing about this "remix" is they added two tracks that are quite good, especially the "B Side" tune; it's very "classic rock" sounding. I can listen to the two Jake E. Lee albums with Ozzy more than the Randy ones simply because I've heard the other stuff so many times that I need to be in a certain mood that borrows with it a kind of nostalgic lightning to ride its course. With BARK and THE ULTIMATE SIN, though I've been into these albums since I was a teenager (when they came out... I rode my ten-speed two cities to buy SIN at a Warehouse music), it always feels like I don't quite know them enough... especially BARK that's not, thankfully, over-saturated with dated antiwar (or anti coldwar) sentiment. I made up my own order of songs for BARK, and here it goes: 1) Waiting for Darkness 2) Slow Down 3)Bark at the Moon 4) Now You See It 5) Centre of Eternity 6) You're No Different 7) One Up The B-Side 8) Spiders 9) So Tired 10) Rock N' Roll rebel... The last tune what most people like best, but for me, the title track remains champ for the riff alone, and after that Slow Down and Waiting for Darkness. Some very underrated tracks here.

This song is just a classic. Completes the album. Composition is tight. Nice groove of base and keyboards. The rock edge is provided by Jake E. Lee. Ozzy's lyrics are right on point. Emotion is there. You can feel what he is thinking on this track. My favorite song on the Lp. A Straight classic.

Most of Ozzy's albums aren't Great. But many of them are Good. Bark at the Moon is neither. The title track is great but the overall album only rises to Okay. Some solid songs but nothing as good as the title track. It is obvious he is missing Randy Rhodes and is unsettled on what to do next.

This one of Ozzys best albums after Randys death. But give thanks that Ozzy found Lee. Without Lee writing this album, Ozzy probably would have a footnote in metal.
