Minimalist Influences

If you're a fan of minimalism (though you don't have to be), this music is especially for you. Repetitive rhythms here are infused with lush orchestration and beautiful melodies. Another reviewer heard Philip Glass, which I detected only in some of the rhythms. But the orchestrations here reminded me more of works by John Adams. I heard nods to at least three Adams pieces: "Century Rolls", "Naive & Sentimental Music", and "Tromba Lontana". Regardless, this music is wonderful on it's own terms: dreamy, contemplative, great for pre-dawn hours or a cloudy day. Enjoy!

Desplat has written some exquisitely beautiful music in the few years that he's been on the movie-scoring scene. This score, although still exquisitely beautiful, sets new boundaries for creativity. The ideas here are so fresh and so different, yet still beautiful, that the thought of "where did he come up with these ideas?" just makes my head spin. Wonderful score, worth the full download. You'll find yourself listening to it over and over again.

Moving and emotional yet cutting edge and wildly innovative. Simply amazing. Very Kubrickian though not derivative of anything I can think of. I absolutely love this soundtrack. And completely separately, I thought the film was stunningly good as well. And of course those two things go together but this is masterful album might possibly have a broader appeal than the film, that's genius seems to be missed on some people. Amazing.

It's mesmerizing and a perfect score for the broody movie. This score introduced me to Alexandre Desplat. I also love his score for The Painted Veil.
Different, yet it is indeed inspiring

Even though the score is different, the movie is different as well. How many times to you hear about some random 10-year-old boy walking up to a grown woman and telling her he's her dead husband? Though it's unique, which is what I like best about it, I have to say my two favorite pieces are 'Timpani' because I think it's such an interesting timpani part and I would love to try to play it. My other favorite has to be 'The Engagement'. I agree with the others: the piano melody is haunting, and yes, it can remind some of Philip Glass. I enjoy it because I think the piano part is a rather beautiful piece. My last favorite is 'Elegy' because it's so dramatic and it just overwhelms you when you listen to it. It's unbelieveable. I loved this film score the minute I heard it, and I assure you, it will absolutely not be a waste of your money. Well done, Alexandre Desplat!

When I first watched the film, I was in desperate need to know who created the music; it was seriously very enchanting and haunting. So I looked at the credits for the longest time (the credit song, by the way, is "Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence) and saw 'Alexandre Desplat' come up. Immediately I went and I bought the score, and let me just say it's a find addition to my collection of movie scores. I highly recommend it.

One of my all time favorites. Methodical piano in the spirit of Philip Glass. When the movie first started I actually though Philip Glass was the composer. If you're a fan of film music, this one is to be added to your collection.... Cheers
