I have been listening to this album for years now. I believe this is their best album they ever made. I tried listening to their other records but they do not come anywhere close to this album. It is hard it is heavy and the song structure is great! Buy it!

You may know Max Cavalera as the ex-vocalist for Sepultura, one of the biggest modern metal bands in the business. I don't know Sepultura very well, but I was looking for some new bands, and I heard that Soulfly was a good band. I went through their entire discography, and immediately put all of their albums on my wish list. This album, simply titled 'Soulfly', gives you a taste of what the band can do. The vocals done by Max are all screamed, but there is melody in the music. The album's sound is unquestionably nu metal, but with a slight twist. There is a lot of Brazilian instrumentation in the songs, from the tribal drumming to the occasional foreign words. The album starts with 'Eye for an Eye', an explosive track that easily shows off the band's aggressive approach to modern metal. The album's energy never slows up from there, and until the end should keep you satisfied. There are also special guest artists, as there are on every Soulfly album. DJ Lethal and Fred Durst of the rap metal band Limp Bizkit pop up on 'Bleed', DJing and rapping vocals, respectively, and Chino Moreno of the alt-metal band Deftones shows up on 'First Commandment'. You'll hear Chino again on another Soulfly album as well. You will also hear the voice of Benji Webbe, vocalist for Skindred, as well as Christian Olde Wolbers of industrial metal band Fear Factory on guitar. Overall, this is a great album for those who appreciate heavy metal music. Unless you hate nu metal, buy it now; it's well worth your 10 dollars.

Max knocked it out with this flowing melodic heavy as all hell album that is as appealing now in a world full of crap as it was dominating back in 98 ....Soulfly is everything Sepultura is an more ....they have Max!

This continued where Roots left off. This album made me want to destroy things. Still does.

I listened to this album for the first time in years today and it's still as good today as it was then. Soulfly were pretty original when they came out. Like the review says the album is heavy but still experimental.

I've been listening to this cd for over 10 years now. Soufly is one of the first metal bands I truly fell in love with. The album is intense even if you can't understand when they speak in thier language you get the general feeling. The only thing that tops this was seeing them live.

They have it, you can tell it from the first few tracks. They're living for something that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with a CD. Is that a compliment? I believe they love the music, and I would love to see them live. Highly recommended, not my favorite, but there is no accounting for my poor taste.

i just listened to this album tonight for the first time almost ten years, and was surprised to hear how good it was. (i guess there is a reason why i listened to it for weeks straight back in high school.) it really sort of sounds like the b*st*rd brother of sepultura's tour-de-force, 'roots', which makes sense as max carried those ideas forward to his new band. if you love 'roots', and want some more of the same, this album is for you; if 'roots' was a bit too hard for you, this album will hurt your head.

Soulfly is a very talented metal band and this album proves that. There are some rough areas but overall I'll recommend this to anyone who loves heavy metal.
