  • New Wave Rock

Plant definitely immersed himself in the new wave and more synthetic sounds of the 80s in this one. That makes it more of a "period piece" than the first two superb solo albums, but yet it still stands on its own two decades later. Some of the synth parts sound a bit kitsch now, but Plant's vocals and the superb drumming of Hayward keep the sounds rocking and real. Another unique factor here which makes for an additional layer of catchiness : the vocal hooks provided by the pre-Curve Toni Halliday, a welcome presence and counterpoint, rhythmic and sensual, to Plant''s soaring vocals. Recommended.
  • Great remaster

I think they did a stellar job remastering this CD. They've mitigated the harsh high end and corrected the lacking bottom end from the original CD pressing. My only complaint is including that horrible 2006 remix of "Little By Little." It sounds like someone's bad imaging of the song had it been produced in the 90s rather than the 80s.

The only song I purchased from the album is Little By Little. I remember this song growing up. I like hearing the bass, guitar, all of it!

I courageously put this album as the best in Robert Plant's career. This collection of songs does not try to be a past version of his powerful voice and musical accompaniment. The unfortunate comparisons to Plant's work with Led Zeppelin will always be made, but these songs are best interpreted as a reinvention of masterful musical craftsman. There is a wide berth of sounds and styles here, blending together as a whole to offer something for any rock fan with a broad musical pallet. Plant surrounds himself with excellent musicians on "Shaken", as a drummer I am till amazed at the complexity and simplicity that make up "Little by Little". "Sixes and Sevens" is a great closer to this chapter, brilliant range in voice and the ability to paint a brooding picture with words and tone. Approach this with the proper perspective and you will be impressed.

The music on this album is all over the place, but it is one I couldn't get out of my tape deck in 1985. Little By Little and Sixes And Sevens got the play, but check out Too Loud to really change things up. I love the swirling, circular guitar part in this song.
  • He was the man in the 80's

Plant was and still is the best singer ever to me. It's hard not to respect someone who takes chances and pushes the envelope. That being said - check out sixes and sevens - I think it is one of the smoothest tracks he ever recorded right up there with big log.
  • Doing Your Own Thing

This is Plant's best. He was finding his own thing here and it felt right and good. No one sounded like this. It was not Zep and was not a parody of Zep (which is what he turned into after the sale of this one sunk). I played the cassette every spring, over and over again, for years until it wore out. It still sounds fresh and alive.
