  • Byrne’s Solo Best

The most overlooked album of the 1980’s. David Byrne’s solo career starts here, and this album is far superior to not just “Bush of Ghosts” or “The Forest,” but the vast majority of the Talking Heads discography. Inspired and fearless. The next logical step following “Naked” is indeed “Rei Momo.” It’s Byrne at the height of his creative powers, before playing it a little safer with the likes of “Uh-Oh” (the follow up to this release.)

Perhaps a perfect soundtrack for a sunny afternoon in Gainesville. Caution: Neighbors may stop by and begin dancing

I like the Talking Heads, but not *all* their songs really do it for me. My drum instructor years ago gave me Don't Want to Be a Part of Your World. And to demonstrate I fully grasped the "samba" I had to play along tothe whole song start to finish. It is fast! For a long time I was so focused on that one song I didn't connect that David Byrne is the Talking Heads singer!! I eventually owned the album, and after liking it so much I looked up David Byrne and was blindsided when I learned he's from the talking heads! Wow did that make things much clearer. Great singer. Even better songwriter. This album made me appreciate all that David Byrne has made a lot more. Plus...The percussion on this album is amazing!

Not one to gush over a favorite artist work just because it is by that artist but Rei Momo sunk its teeth in me the first time I listened to it all those years ago and my relationship with these recording is still going strong. Byrne takes an almost academic approach to exploring the variety of traditional Latin American rhythms and melodies but layers his own semi-surrealistic lyrics and its a marriage made in heaven.
