A track by track analysis: 1. As I Am 6/5 stars I do believe that this is my all time favorite song by Dream Theater. It’s heavy and the chorus melody is so so good. It does all of the right things for me. If you don’t prefer the profanity, then I suggest nabbing the radio edit off Greatest Hit, it’s clean despite iTunes’ erroneous mislabeling as explicit. 2. This Dying Soul 6/5 The Glass Prison started off a series of songs by Mike Portnoy concerning his experience with Alcoholics Anonymous, and This Dying Soul marks the second track of the saga. Heavier than Glass Prison, John Petrucci plays some great riffs and Portnoy rises to the challenge, but I think Jordan Rudess’ solo toward the end adds excitement and mayhem, resulting in my favorite Rudess solo. 3. Endless Sacrifice 6/5 Beginning a sad sack ballad only to rip into a crushing chorus, Endless Sacrifice demands attention and gets it. Yet another classic. 4. Honor Thy Father 6/5 Despite myself not being a fan of the profanity, I still absolutely love this song. It’s very heavy and all of the elements blend in perfectly. Good work on the whole. 5. Vacant 6/5 Dream Theater’s darkest ballad is also among their most gorgeous. The cello is quite beautiful, and the song gives off an Evanescence-type mood. Segues into the next terrific track. 6. Stream of Consciousness 6/5 I personally believe that this is the band’s best instrumental song, being its longest one. It’s tuneful and abrasive, and keeps you interested for all of its 11 minutes. I consider it to be better than even the legendary Dance of Eternity. 7. In the Name of God 6/5 This 14 minute rager ends a strong album on a spectacular note. The riffs are the meanest of the record, and the transition from verse to chorus changes mood and tempo without spoiling the moment. A great song beginning to end. Consensus: It may boast no less than 5 11 minute songs out of 7 tracks total, but nevertheless Dream Theater crafted a very accessible and very heavy progressive metal record album. If you were to only own 3 DT records, I’d say you should choose Images and Words, Awake, and this one. The reason is is that this album demonstrates their darker, much heavier side while Images and Words shows off their more melodic and soaring side, with Awake being a mixture of both. Train of Thought remains to this day Dream Theater’s greatest achievement, and I have no shame listing it #1 on my top 10 DT albums.

Over a decade later, and this remains to be one of my all-time favorite albums. The mix is perfect, the writing is concise yet still sprawling and massively creative. Honor Thy Father is perhaps DT's angriest and angstiest song of all, and In the Name of God has some of their tastiest and most technically impressive riffs. Absolutely 11/10 album, mandatory listening for any metal fan.

This is one of the harder albums DT has made and it is beyond incredible. Highly recommended if you enjoy dream theaters harder stuff.
  • Guitars

This album could be called Dream Theater: Guitars. The electric guitar is here elevated to its fullest potential. It is played with sharp edges, raw power, and in anger. Anyone with a taste for sick guitar licks should find something delicious among the tracks of Train of Thought.

I'm still a new fan of Dream Theater, as I've been following these guys since last November. And through lots of reviews written on iTunes and on amazon, I couldn't help notice 3 main camps in the Dream Theater fan base: 1: the diehards that love their old stuff and can't get over the fact that Portnoy is gone and that no album will ever to Images and Words and blah blah blah. 2) the newer fans that prefer what has been released recently like ADTOE and the self titled cut, and 3: the median fans that love everything that Dream Theater has ever released and love all sides of DT. I'm one of those people. And in all honesty, this album is definitely up there among their best. If you're still new to DT, I'd suggest Images and Words or Octavarium because this is one of DT's darkest and heaviest records they've released. While very satisfying to listen to, this isn't what DT is known for, but it's a good change up if you're in the mood for something dark and heavy, but musically proficient.
  • A Heavy, Epic DT Album

You already know that this album is considered Dream Theater's heaviest, and that is rightfully so. There is little variation. This Dying Soul, Honor Thy Father, and In the Name of God will rock you. Stream of Consciousness is, however, the standout. The bands prog backbone is not abandoned though. At some spots, the sheer technicality will floor you. Amazing pieces of music are found all throughout the record. Some of the more difficult spots in the DT catalogue, combined with refreshingly aggressive material make for another of "classic" DT album.
