  • Actual voices?

Are these the actual recordings made by Natalie Wood, Russ Tamblyn, etc.? Or are they instead the overdubs by Marni Nixon, etc.?

I just watched the movie and instantly fell in love with the music and film. Probably one of my favourite soundtracks/albums because every song is just so wonderful!

An American Legend. Well executed music re-imaging Romeo and Juliet in the gang ridden West Side. Could the musical and theatrical shock change the fate of gang behavior in America? Can the rough and tumble emigrant/local tension find that “Somewhere, a place for us.” The issues written large and profoundly personalized. Frankly, the music is good too.

  • Duet Songs: Poor Dubbing

The songs are great. However, for the duet songs, particularly the love songs, only one voice is clear. The other voice echoes, is too soft, and the instrumental part of the song is louder than the person’s voice. For example, I could only hear Maria’s voice in “Tonight” and not Tony’s voice. The same was for “A Boy Like That/ I Have A Love.” I could only hear Anita’s voice and not Maria’s voice.

I purchased my copy at a yard sale. The cover is so well-worn..., with bits of white paper peaking through the red. It has likely been listened to by someone or other on a regular basis for 50 years! It's just that good. The only problem is that the groove deteriorates a bit with so much usage. I've grown accustomed to each and every pop as if it were part of the score. However, I think it's time for a fresh copy for my iPod. I think I'll at least purchase "Tonight", "Quintet" and "Somewhere", if not the whole album.
