Why are all the reviews so old??? How exciting that this innovative and haunting piece was selected for such a disturbing and entertaining show (Dark, 2017 Netflix). It really sets the tone. Impressive - and great to find it here. 5 stars for avant-garde - I was convinced it was Meredith Monk; thanks Caroline Shaw/Toothful singers!
  • Amazing new music

This piece is absolutely gorgeous. While most art music and academic music written today has become little more than an exercise in historical reenactment, Caroline Shaw has managed to create a piece that firmly sits in the art world, but feels as fresh and accessible as anything created in the popular music world. Her music doesn’t just feel performed; it feels produced in the best sense of the term. Gorgeous orchestration mixed with Shape Note Singing mixed with Tuvan Throat Singing. Enough said.

I heard Roomful of Teeth perform 2 movements of this piece the other night. So beautiful. The music really came alive. Really well written work and lovely to listen to. Caroline was so gracious as I stumbled over my words talking with her about her work. I’m looking forward to getting to hear more of her works in the years to come.

I can't believe this was even produced, much less deemed prize-worthy. It literally drove our cats out of the room. The critics in the rarified air of the Berkshires may find something accessible about this, but to us here in Alaska, we'll pass.

A young, female composer winning a Pulitzer for this makes it something to check out in and of itself. This should definitely be a sound track! Pleasant on the ears and inredibly well done.

This is excellent work from the amazingly talented Caroline Shaw. I don't know how she could be on a hotter streak than she is right now.
  • Haunting and effective

Very well done contemporary choral music. I look forward to hearing more from this composer.

When I heard that the Pulizer gave a prize to some wet-behind-the-ears grad student, I though that it was a sign that the Pulizer had lost it's relivance. Weirdly enough, this is actually pretty good. It's new, and yet accessible to the average public. The vocal group give it a fine reading, but the production quality is a tad be overdone to my taste. Still, it's a worthwhile recording to have. -Bz

I love to hear a young female composer win anything; so much the better when that composer is as talented as Shaw, the award is the Pulitzer, and the work is as well performed as this.
