Reviews

  • Only bad DT album

There is only one reason I believe that the Mike Portnoy era is slightly better than the Mike Mangini era, and that is DT’s self titled and the Astonishing. For DT self titled, they underutilized the elements that make them who they are, and go for theatrical balladeer bombast that robs the band of heavy metal ferocity (save the epic 22 minute Illumination Theory, The Enemy Inside, and the wicked instrumental tracks) that is what makes them so good. Mangini isn’t used half as much as he should have, and Rudess sounds uninspired. LaBrie also sounds quite bored. On the whole my least favorite Dream Theater record

Listened to this album once and had to have it! One of my favorite DT albums!

Just too many ballads for my taste. Not enough punch
  • Very good

For two years I thought it was pretty boring. I listened to it a few days ago and I was actually enjoying it. It's really weird though that all of a sudden I like it. I still don't think it's as good as most of the stuff with Portnoy, but it's still Dream Theater. I do think the drumming is very boring compared to Portnoy's drumming. The drums don't sound great either.

Musically this band is amazing. vocally is another story. I have tried for years to appreciate this band but the singer kills it for me every time.

I first heard Dream Theater in a small bar in Tempe, Arizona in 1992 when they introduced the “Images and Words” CD. I’ve been a huge fan ever since. This CD has got to be one of the best recordings yet. The material takes you thru a sonic journey of epic proportions. I mean, really, who can put an orchestral movement, that will bring you to tears, in the middle of a progressive rock song? Dream Theater, thats who. Hats off the the producers and engineers that captured the intense and dramatic performances on this album. I really enjoy the new direction Dream Theater is going. You have to experience the sonic quality of this album with a great set of headphones or a killer sound system. After the final note of this album, all I can say is “WOW, absolutely amazing” and play it again. Thank you Dream Theater for the past years and years to come for all the great music.

  • Songs good, terrible mix

I know it’s ‘metal’ to have the clicky-bass drum, but there’s barely a distinction between Mike’s toms and his kick drums. No definition to John’s bass and overall, I hear mostly vocals and clicky kick drums interrupted by occasional keyboard washes. The guitars sound great when not much else is going on, but they get quickly washed away when the rest of the band is playing together. I love this band and I like the songs, but the mix sounds like a mid-’90’s metal record. Maybe the CD sounds better...
  • More risk needs to be taken

This album could have been better. I feel like there could have been more risk taken to this album. Drums sound like they are lacking (production wise) and it the contrast is missing simply because it isn't intense enough at the right parts. I am not slamming these guys saying that I don't like their music; I am just saying that I would like to hear them take more risks in their writing so that I do engage myself in the progression that they did successfully (such as in Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence)
  • HOLY $*%&

Get it. Unbelievable next step for the most awesome band to ever break the mold.
