I was in late high school when this came out. I remember driving around in my 98 Rav 4 blasting this for months on end. I have so much love for this album. It showed a fuller range for the Beastie Boys - it’s funky, fresh, energetic, psychedelic, and contemplative. So much in one album!

Growing up in the late Sixties, I tended to shy away from Hip-Hop/Rap. But this album offers a full buffet of music genres that are yummy in the tummy! Some listeners have discounted the slower, instrumental tracks on this album. But that's the magic of the Beastles. They are all extremely talented as musicians. They want to explore music and not get stuck in a rut. So, if you want to come along for the ride, they can take you there. This old man can appreciate this talent.

Overall, this album has some bangers in the vain of hip-hop. It’s when the fellas take a few missteps into their “band mode” is where things go a little boring here, unlike Check Your Head and Ill Communication where they knocked that sound out of the park. At 22 tracks deep, it’s a little too long. Ditch the slow mess of tracks (about six total), and you could have a classic album here. It should have been edited better when released. Still, Beasties bring the heat this go round. Worth a grab if you are a fan.

The songs on this album are arranged to maximize listening pleasure. They start off quickly with the hip-hop theme and mellow out as the album progresses. The lyrics and samples throughout the album are genius (example from puttin' shame in your game):
"Don't grease my palm with your filthy cash
Multinationals spreading like a rash
I might stick around or I might be a fad
But I won't sell my songs for no TV ad"
My personal favorites are:
" The Move", " Puttin' Shame in Your Game", "Flowin' Prose", "Three MCs and One DJ", "The Grasshopper Unit", and "Unite"
The crowd pleasers include "Body Movin" and "Intergalactic".
In a world of crappy, misogynistic, over-produced Pop "Hip-Hop/Rap" the Beastie Boys are one of few quality acts that keep the genre legitimate. They don't stoop to the level of Whip/ Ne-Ne.
