She is an exceptional talent whose simple and beautiful prose evoke emotions simmering just below the melody. It's hard to deny the truth.

I have to disagree with the itunes review as well. While all the writing may not be on a par with her best work, the record as a whole is beautifully played, sung, and produced. Look at Miss Ohio and Wayside/Back in Time are standouts that seem to borrow (in the best way possible) their sound and feel from Neil Young's Harvest.

It’s inevitable that this album be compared to her previous ones, so here goes: it's a little all over the place, but still in the o.k. to good range. It’s a bit like an idea free-for-all. Each song starts in a promising direction, its own little world entirely, but none of the songs stand together in the end (with the exception of "I had a real good..." and "No one knows my name"). But then, that might be what they were wanting and, it might be what you want too.

I have all of Gillian Welch's albums and I can't choose a favorite. This album is as good as any. I love every track on it and then some. She is by far my favorite singer/songwriter right now. One of my favorite tracks - "One Little Song"

Wonderfully honest, soulful and touching... This work is though-provoking and nakedly revealing without ever becoming cliched or sentimental. For those that have made non-conformist detours on their life path, this album truly is a road map to the soul journey. I cannot recommend it more highly.

I disagree with the i-tunes reviewer above about the merit of this album relative to her others. This album knocked my socks off.
  • Just Amazing!!!

Gillian's first records set the listener up to expect simple, intimate production of some of this nation's best original music. "Soul Journey", to my ears, was a surprise. The songs were there...still as beautiful, thought provoking, easily identified-with and direct as ever. The production, however, was a shocker. This album enjoys fuller arrangements...electric bass and (gasp) drums on most every track. The result: somehow an increased sparseness and engaging detachment. Just amazing. If you're a fan of Gillian's music you will be intrigued by the subtle and but surprising and powerful change wrought by the addition of fuller instrumentation. Those new to her music will buy the rest of her albums.

One of the most beautiful collection of songs I have ever heard. Stands along side Lucinda William's "Car Wheels On a Gravel Road" as one of the best folk/country albums of the last 10 years.
