This sound has made the long winter somehow cozy. I just poured a wicked Barollo and settled into its symphonic excellence. great album…dare I say better then the first?
  • Superb…but depends on taste

First off, let me say that my favorite tracks on this record are “Mary L.” and “Forget Me Not”. It’s easier to digest someone’s opinion if you know where their musical palate lies. With that said, I do think this is a superb record. While “Tourist” was an instant classic for me, this offering will take a little time to grow. Personally, I would love to hear an instrumental version of this album because the “World Music" vibe to the vocal samples can be a bit much for me at times. But that’s just me. Overall, it it fantastic to have new music from this man. He has always had that ability to craft music that can take you somewhere that is beautiful and luxurious. I hope this is the start of constant new music from St. Germain.
  • Good for what it is

Good for what it is and that is ambient background music. After the first two very danceable albums. There does not seem to be any danceable beats in this album. Obviously that is not what he’s going for this time around. That was the reason the majority of us got into St Germain. I understand you want to expand musically but don’t forget your roots / bread and butter. Seeing as it was such a short LP a couple more dance tracks on top of it would not have hurt anyone unless…there is big danceable LP planned…first 2 LPs were classic…sure I expected more but I will still check St Germain again based on previous releases, Merci Beaucoup Monsieur et bon chance

Disappointing follow-up. Superb craft, but somehow lacking in emotion and direction. Feels like very well-crafted background music, without much soul or heart.

Puissant album. Years of research and experimentation to create an amazing fusion of jazz, blues and music from West Africa. Some songs still have a “wink” to Tourist style. Overall, it’s a great album. I can already see tons of DJ playing his songs and remixing them. Great work Ludo.

Satisfies on all levels. Hard to say what the driver is? Like a joyous coming together of styles across the historical landscape of music. Blues, Jazz, House, Electronica, it all blends. Brilliant!
  • Great to hear St. Germain back - but this album lacks the charm

I’m thrilled that Ludovic is producing St. Germain again, but this album felt a bit flat when it comes to characteristics that defined the first two albums. Musically, the album feels excellent and well thought out and there are a few tracks with interesting instrumentations/arrangements…. but the overall album as a whole doesn’t really match with the other two. It’s nice to hear the musical progression of Ludovic’s production style and ideas, but his 3rd effort sounds a bit flat or “pop” compared to his other work. I wouldn’t go so far as to say this is in Smooth Jazz territory, but it wouldn’t feel out of place compared to the more daring smooth jazz artists. My biggest issue with the album is the incessant ethnic singing that is present in the majority of the tracks. If only there were dub versions of these songs, then I’d be quite QUITE happy. All in all it’s not a horrendous effort, and as I said it’s cool to hear something that goes in a different direction than the other two more “Housey” records, but this one feels to have missed the mark by a bit, but that’s really up to the listener’s tastes really.

Pure Class. South African vocals and instrumentation meets delicate French House grooves all spun with threads of Blues and Jazz throughout. There are some moments of absolute brilliance that shine throughout the intricate productions, and it really elevates the album from standard "World" music. It's also noteworthy that the deep house underpinnings are incredible solid in their own right (I could listen to dub mixes of all the songs and be perfectly happy). Hopefully this is the start of more releases from St. Germaine!
  • Worth Waiting For

There is a lot of superb new eclectic music, film and art coming out of France these days. Perhaps it is France’s time to shine. Surely the world has waited a LONG time for this album from French musical maestro Ludovic Navarre - AKA St. Germain. Since his Jazz/House 2000 release “Tourist” the world has become flooded with electronica of all sorts. But the best always rises to the top, as this release surely will. I recall “Tourist” was a revolution in styles and vibe - at the time. The sound was so satisfying and was so perfect for so many listening environments that the album was played seemingly EVERYWHERE for years. Restaurants, clubs, bars, hotels, airlines, stores, waiting rooms. The music answered a need for well-crafted chill, and it delivered. At first listen this new album sounds like it will follow in the broad spectrum success of “Tourist”. The world is soon gonna be spinning and streaming this wax so much that it will become part of the musical fabric of our days. Good music does that. Bad music goes away quickly. Good music lingers for a long time, and makes us hungry for more, even if we have to wait 15 years for it.

I've been listening to the full album via NPR stream and the more I play it, the more I feel like crying because of the stories and feelings each individual song has. I can definitely hear the South African house vibe (which I love) and the accumulation of past elements from Mr. Navarre discography all in one. This album is like fine wine and can tell was made with love, not with the sole purpose of making a quick buck. Indeed....the world is a better place!
