Reviews

  • This album didn't come out in 1970.

That's the shoddy kind of iTunes marketing that makes me a litttle crazy. It's also unethically deceptive, as the music Newman was doing in the early 70's was superlative and groundbreaking. Which this isn't. This is carefully targeted, well-polished frimly MOTR AOR fodder.
  • Includes 2 of his most beautiful songs

Same Girl and Real Emotional Girl..... 2 of Newman's most beautiful songs, though also very sad and, in the case of the first, dark and stealthily subversive; some of Newman's most beautiful ballads are rather dark upon closer inspection of the lyrics
  • Blatant sarcasm but also genuine affection.

Despite the statements in the editorial review to the contrary, the sarcasm is not lost on those who have embraced it as their city's unofficial anthem. L.A. has been disparaged as a city without any important value for generations. Its residents are vain and superficial and the best things the city has going for it are the beaches and the weather. Despite its faults though, people embrace L.A. and love it for what it is. It is the nuance of satire mixed with appreciation that make this a great song and a great anthem for Los Angeles.
  • My song

As far as I know, just about everyone in the Navy had a song that reminded them of home. Of course, this was mine, to be played as loud and proud as possible. Brought it all home. The weather in the Persian Gulf is much like it is here in the Los Angeles metro area. The smell of the sand, the air, the salt, everything. Combined with this song...you could go up to the "steel" beach, close your eyes and you were home.
