Trivium – “In Waves” To paraphrase Matt Heafy before the release of this album, he shared his thoughts that trivium wanted to drop the 7th string and get back to rocking a classic 6 string orientation. Yet, in true metal fashion, they decide to tune everything down 2 and half steps to produce easily their heaviest album to date. Other than the occasional sections where the lead guitar graces high notes over the heavy chugging, while playing in unison, the guitar tones emit a thick, dark tone to produce a heavy record. The catchy riffs of "Inception of the End" and the heaviness of the opening riffs of "Dusk Dismantled" weave evenly with the lighter offerings of "Caustic Are The Ties That Bind" and "Of All These Yesterdays" to produce a fuller sound on the album and not lean too heavily in one direction. Plus, Heafy displays his 3 styles of vocals in singing, yelling, and the harsh singing that breaches the gap between the two. The departure of Travis Smith prior to this album made me skeptical as to the style of drums that would come about on this album. I am glad to say that Nick Augusto did as good if not a better job than Travis could have on this particular album. Travis may have more overall raw talent and was a true master at filling gaps in previous albums with intricate tom tom patterns and rapid double bass, however Nick is more of a straight edge drummer that understands the value of a plain metal beat and when it's time to produce a more basic yet more effective pattern. His playing is not showy, yet contains enough challenging moments to give his play merit amongst metal drummers of today. The speedy breakdown in "Forsake Not The Dream" highlights his speed while the intro to "Dusk Dismantled" displays his understanding of how to effectively introduce a song with something other than a basic 4/4 hitting of an open hi hat. After listening to "Ember to Inferno," "In Waves," and everything in between, it is remarkable to see what this band has accomplished in 8 short years. This album brought them to a darker level that is just one more stop on a surly bright future. This is a great album, filled with great songs. A few took time to grow on me (A Skyline's Severance, Inception of the End) and some are yet to grow on me (Watch the World Burn) but other than thay simply an incredible album.

great album awesome YEAH¡¡¡¡¡¡

After one listen I can say this is definitely awesome. I've been a Trivium fan since Ascendancy and I've always thought that album was amazing. I loved the Crusade as well but I just couldn't get into Shogun. I know a lot of people love it but it just wasn't for me so I was a bit worried that this album would be the same. After hearing In Waves I wasn't immediatley blown away but turns out that's probably my least favorite song on the record. This record for sure is most similar to Ascendancy which to me is their Master of Puppets so if you like that one you'll like this one. The only reason I only gave it 4 stars is because for 5 stars is reserved for those over the top brilliant records like Reign in Blood and Vulgar Display of Power. Although I don't put there with those it renewed my hope that Trivium might someday get there.

A heavy, catchy, yet more simplistic album than any of their previous albums, trivium combines brutality with a sound that's easy to listen to & enjoy. There's something in here for everyone. 10/10!!!

So yeah smart metal is what these guys are about. They are better than Metallica because they are the here and now.The evolved.

What happened to the complexity? What happened to the brutality? What happened to the leads? Shogun was by far their best album. It was an epic battle. Crusade was pretty brutal. Loved the fast thrash riffs. Ascendancy was a great step in the right direction. Very mature for their age. This album however is a major down step. Not terrible, but not trivium. Come on guys your way better than this. Your trivium. Not some generic metalcore band.
